About William Jones
Visually I am most influenced by nature, particularly the landscape; a subject I am frequently drawn back to. I am not a colorist being more attracted to pattern and shape leading me to reference artists like Neil Welliver, Edward Hopper and Vincent van Gogh. Thematically I am interested in spirituality and symbolism. I pursue art to aid me in my spiritual journey. My paintings are not nearly identical stamped out images, yet they are all symbols. In some figures are used to represent ideas and with others only design. They are united in that each represents a point in the process of a spiritual journey. Each of these images is the result of an investigation of a spiritual tradition, practice or personal experience. My travel and education have impacted my work as well. Education has always been important to me and I have attended different schools in accordance with my travels. I hold an MA from the University of Houston, Clear Lake, a BFA from California State Fullerton, and an AA from San Jacinto College. I have also attended George Mason University, University of Maryland (Okinawa Japan), University of New Orleans, University of West Bohemia, and summer workshops at The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Rice University. I retired from 20 years of teaching secondary art June 1, 2018.
